Seen from the lookout, the Kelingking cliff forms a silhouette everyone recognises as a dinosaur's head plunging into the sea. The Balinese name means 'little finger'.
The beach below is a hundred and fifty metres down, and the descent is on a path of earth and roots equipped with bamboo rails. It takes forty-five minutes down and nearly an hour and a half back up, in the heat. Many people turn round at the lookout after twenty minutes.
Getting there
On the south-west coast of Nusa Penida, an hour by scooter from Toyapakeh port, on roads in poor condition.
What the price covers
paid site entry and parking, rates to be confirmed
What to bring
- Walking shoes
- 1.5 L of water
- Sportswear
- International driving permit
Rules on site
The descent is steep, slippery and unsupported: there have been serious accidents. Do not attempt it in flip-flops, in the middle of the day, or without two litres of water. Swimming at the bottom is dangerous — the current is fierce.
