In short

An island of cliffs and hard-to-reach coves, made famous by its photographs. The reality is rougher: broken roads, steep descents, few services.

People come for a few days of spectacular scenery, rarely to settle.

What it really costs

Accommodation is cheap, but everything else arrives by boat and costs more than in Bali.

Rental scooters are often in poor condition; paying more for a decent one is a safety question here, not a comfort one.

When to go

Dry season from April to October. Crossings are cancelled in heavy seas, and the island has no airport.

April, May and October avoid the July and August crowds.

What nobody tells you

Scooter accidents are frequent here: the slopes are steep and the surface is bad.

The currents on the west coast are violent. Several photogenic beaches are not swimmable, with nothing on site to say so.

Visa

Short stay

Visa on arrival for French citizens, extendable once.

Long stay

Remote-work KITAS, or an investor visa.

What you can visit without a tour in Nusa Penida, with the gate price.

  • Kelingking Beach

    must-seePrice unconfirmed

A cliff shaped like a dinosaur's head above a white beach wedged below it.

The view from the top is included once you have paid. The descent is an hour of bamboo ladder over the drop, and two hours back up.

paid site entry and parking, rates to be confirmed

  • Angel's Billabong and Broken Beach

    must-seePrice unconfirmed

A natural pool on the ocean edge, and an arch cut into the cliff two hundred metres away.

Do not swim in the billabong at high tide or in swell: waves come over the lip and people have been swept out.

paid site entry, rate to be confirmed

  • Diamond Beach

    Price unconfirmed

White limestone stacks planted in turquoise water, at the bottom of a stairway cut into the cliff.

Swimming is dangerous: the current is strong and there are no lifeguards. This beach is looked at more than swum.
