The Full Moon Party has been held on Haad Rin beach at every full moon since the early 1980s, when it is said to have started as a travellers' birthday party. It now draws between ten and thirty thousand people depending on the season.
It has become an industry: several stages, buckets of cocktails sold at the water's edge, and satellite parties on the preceding nights. The island fills up three days ahead and empties the day after, and accommodation prices double or triple over that window.

Rules on site
The cocktail buckets are mixed with untraceable local spirits and poisoning is common: never leave a drink unattended. Foot injuries from broken glass are the island's leading medical complaint — closed shoes, and no jumping the flaming rope.
