In short

A teardrop-shaped island covered in coconut palms and mangroves, with a famous wave at Cloud 9. General Luna holds the accommodation, the cafés and the coworking spaces.

The island is covered by scooter, on a road that almost rings it.

What it really costs

Prices have risen a great deal since the island became known, but stay below Bali at equal comfort.

Trips out to the islets and lagoons are shared: alone, the boat costs a lot for the day.

When to go

The swell is good from August to November, the weather kinder from March to May.

December to February concentrates the storms, and the 2021 typhoon was a reminder that the island is in the front line.

What nobody tells you

Infrastructure is still fragile: water, power and internet drop regularly.

There is no hospital on the island for serious emergencies. Evacuation means a flight to Cebu or Manila, which assumes flyable weather.

Visa

Short stay

Short exemption for French citizens, extendable on arrival.

Long stay

9(g) visa tied to a local employer.
