Ao Nang

Klong Muang Beach
FreeThe sand north of Ao Nang, quiet, without the longtails or the vendors.
Check the tide table before making the trip: at low water the sea goes out too far to swim. And if Klong Muang still feels too built up, Tubkaek is five minutes further north, faces the same islets and has almost nothing behind the sand.

Start at dawn: the 1,237 steps go up before the limestone heats, and you are back down before nine. Two bottles of water, zipped inside the bag — a macaque takes anything held in the hand, and gives nothing back.

Railay and the limestone cliffs
FreeA peninsula reachable only by longtail. Sheer cliffs, turquoise water, and Thailand's best climbing routes right behind the beach.
The longtail leaves when it has eight passengers: alone in the early morning you either wait or pay for the empty seats — turn up around nine, when the boat fills by itself. Note the time of the last one back as you step off; there is no road out.

300 THB≈ 8.6 $A day trip to a limestone archipelago, an enclosed lagoon and snorkelling. Leave early: the groups arrive mid-morning.
Take the longtail rather than the speedboat: it costs less and leaves earlier. At nine you are in the lagoon almost alone; at ten the speedboats unload everyone at once and it is no longer worth the trip.
