You do not set foot on the rock: only worshippers go up. What you come for is the silhouette at sunset — arrive an hour before, as the coaches empty the car park afterwards.

Price unconfirmedSet off around 3am to reach the summit at sunrise, above the sea of clouds. A guide is compulsory on the Indonesian side.
Breakfast at the summit and the access fee are rarely in the advertised price, and the difference is settled at the top, in cash: have what is included spelled out before booking. Head torch, jacket and gloves — at four in the morning it is around ten degrees up there.

Check the tide before going down: at high water you get out through the cave by jumping off the ledge, and coming back up with a board under your arm is worse. Reef booties, and nothing shiny in your hands at the clifftop — the monkeys take glasses and phones to trade them back for food.
