The church stands where the Ottomans are said to have burned the relics of Saint Sava in 1595. Its construction was a serial: begun in 1935, halted by the war, banned for forty years by the communist regime which turned the site into a car park, resumed in 1985 and finished inside in 2020.
Its central dome, four thousand tonnes, was assembled on the ground and then lifted whole over forty days. The interior is covered in gold mosaic across several thousand square metres, made with Russian help.
