The fortress occupies the spur where the Sava meets the Danube, and that confluence explains everything: a strategic position between central Europe and the Balkans, it has been taken, destroyed and rebuilt some forty times — Celts, Romans, Byzantines, Hungarians, Ottomans, Austrians.
What you see dates mostly from the Austrian and Ottoman reworkings of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The park around it is Belgrade's main park, and the point, at the Victor monument, looks over the confluence — it is the city's viewpoint.
Getting there
At the end of the pedestrian Knez Mihailova, ten minutes on foot from Republic Square.
What to bring
- Walking shoes
- Headlamp
Rules on site
The park and the ramparts are free; only the museums and the inner tower are ticketed. The cobbled ramps are slippery in wet weather, and the park is not lit everywhere at night.
