Gaudí took over the works in 1883 and gave them the last forty-three years of his life, the final twelve exclusively. He knew he would not see it finished and left plaster models rather than drawings — most were destroyed in 1936, and had to be reconstructed.
The interior is a forest: the columns branch like trunks to spread the load, a structural solution Gaudí worked out with models hung upside down and loaded with sandbags. The windows run from blue and green in the east to red and orange in the west: the light changes completely with the hour.
