The park was meant to be a luxury estate of sixty houses, financed by the industrialist Eusebi Güell from 1900. Only two were sold, one of them to Gaudí himself: the venture was a complete commercial failure, and the city bought the land in 1922.
What did get built are the shared parts — the terrace, the undulating bench covered in trencadís, that mosaic of broken ceramic, and the hypostyle hall beneath it, whose columns drain rainwater into a cistern. The monumental zone is ticketed; the rest of the park, wooded and large, stays free.
Getting there
Metro line 3, Lesseps or Vallcarca station, then a fifteen-minute climb — the Vallcarca escalators avoid it. Bus 24 goes to the upper gate.
What to bring
- Walking shoes
Rules on site
Only the monumental zone is ticketed and timed; the rest of the park is free and already gives a fine view. The climb from the metro is steep: go via Vallcarca and its escalators.
