The Canggu rice fields are what remains of the farming village this place was twenty years ago. They are irrigated by subak, the collectively managed Balinese water-sharing system, and they are disappearing year by year under villas.
The concrete paths crossing them — the Shortcut, the Cortado lane — are agricultural rights of way, not made walkways: they are a metre wide and serve farmers as much as scooters. It is the most honest way to see what the area was.
Getting there
Between Jalan Pantai Berawa and Jalan Batu Bolong, along the concrete paths. On foot or by scooter.
What to bring
- Walking shoes
- Swimsuit
- International driving permit
Rules on site
The paths are a metre wide, unrailed, and scooters use them fast in both directions: keep to one side and listen behind you. These are private fields — do not walk down into the paddies.
