Echo Beach, or Pantai Batu Mejan, continues Canggu to the north-west. The sand is black: volcanic sand from the erosion of the island's volcanoes, and it heats up fast in the sun.
The wave breaks over reef and gives consistent lefts, more demanding than Batu Bolong's: it is an intermediate spot. The terraced cafés on the low cliff face straight into the sunset, and it is where all of Canggu gathers at the end of the day.
Getting there
At the end of Jalan Pantai Batu Mejan, in Canggu. Five minutes by scooter from Batu Bolong.
What to bring
- Reef shoes
- Swimsuit
- Board
- International driving permit
Rules on site
The reef is shallow and sharp at low tide: booties for surfing, and no swimming over the coral. The black sand goes well past fifty degrees in the middle of the day.
