The tower was built in 1971 as a radio and television transmitter, and opened to the public in 1980. It stands 236 metres, but sits on top of Mount Namsan: the observation deck is around 480 metres above sea level.
Getting up matters as much as the view. The cable car leaves from Myeongdong, and several paths climb Namsan in thirty to forty-five minutes through wooded parkland, free of charge. The padlocks on the lower terrace run into the tens of thousands.
Getting there
Cable car from Myeongdong, or Namsan bus 01 and 02 from Chungmuro. The park paths climb in thirty to forty-five minutes.
What the price covers
adult observatory ticket; 20,000 ₩ for children. Levels 1 to 4 are free. The cable car is charged separately, 15,000 ₩ return.
What to bring
- Walking shoes
Rules on site
The observatory ticket is separate from the cable car: reaching the top of Namsan does not admit you to the deck. The cable car queue runs over an hour at sunset.
