The market fills two levels opposite the royal palace, at the junction of the two main streets. Very early in the morning it is a genuine fresh-produce market for locals; from nine o'clock the craft stalls replace it almost entirely.
You find baskets woven from ata fibre, batiks, wood carvings and a great deal of mass-produced stock. Haggling is expected and the opening price usually starts at triple: offering a third and working up is the normal way to do it, and nobody takes offence.
Getting there
Corner of Jalan Raya Ubud and Monkey Forest Road, opposite the palace. Central Ubud is all walkable.
Rules on site
The upstairs aisles are narrow and dark, and the sellers there are insistent: do not pick anything up unless you mean to buy. The genuine fresh-produce market is over by nine.
