The market has been here since the early nineteenth century and supplied the city's restaurants — hence its nickname, Osaka's kitchen. It runs six hundred metres under a glass roof, along a single straight aisle.
Its function has shifted: many stalls have moved from wholesale to eating on the spot — sea urchin opened in front of you, beef skewers, grilled scallop. It is good and it is expensive, and the prices are now set for visitors.
Getting there
Metro Sennichimae line, Nippombashi station, exit 10. Ten minutes on foot from Dotonbori.
Hours
Mornings above all; many stalls close in the middle of the afternoon
What to bring
- Reef shoes
Rules on site
Prices are those of a tourist site, not a wholesale market: compare before ordering. Many stalls shut around five, and the market is dead in the evening.
