Hideyoshi had the castle built in 1583 to seal the unification of Japan, with stone walls whose largest blocks weigh over a hundred tonnes. It has been destroyed twice, and the present keep is a 1931 concrete rebuild — the oldest of the country's modern reconstructions.
So the interior is a museum with a lift, not a period interior, and it is worth knowing before you pay. What is authentic are the ramparts, the moats and the gates: the park around them, several hectares, is free to walk.
Getting there
Metro Tanimachi or Chuo line, Tanimachi 4-chome station, then fifteen minutes on foot through the park. The JR Osaka loop stops at Osakajokoen.
What the price covers
entry to the keep and the Toyotomi stone wall museum; 600 ¥ for upper secondary and university students, free below upper secondary. The park itself stays free.
Rules on site
The concrete rebuild disappoints anyone expecting a historic interior: the park and the ramparts, both free, are the better part. In late March the cherry blossom makes the park hard going.
