Kaleiçi is the old town of Antalya, enclosed in walls of Roman and Byzantine origin, reworked by the Seljuks and then the Ottomans. Hadrian's Gate, a three-bayed marble arch, was built for the emperor's visit in 130.
The streets drop towards a harbour cut into the cliff, which was the city's trading port until the twentieth century and now takes pleasure boats. The fluted minaret, in red brick, has been the district's landmark since the thirteenth century.

The lanes are cobbled and drop steeply to the harbour: the climb back is hard, and there is a public lift near Karaalioğlu park. The harbour restaurants charge for the view.
