The garden was founded in 1808 by João VI of Portugal, exiled in Brazil, to acclimatise spices brought from the East Indies. It covers a hundred and forty hectares at the foot of Corcovado and holds over six thousand species.
The avenue of imperial palms has a hundred and thirty-four trees over thirty metres tall, all descended from a single palm planted by the king — whose seeds were officially barred from being propagated outside the garden. The marmosets and toucans here are wild and easily seen.
Getting there
Rua Jardim Botânico, in the district of the same name. Bus from Ipanema or Copacabana, twenty minutes, or a taxi.
Hours
Arboretum Thursday to Tuesday 8am – 5pm, Wednesday 11am – 5pm; museum 10am – 6pm, last entry 5pm, closed Wednesday
What the price covers
foreign visitor entry. R$40 for a resident of Brazil, half price for students, disabled visitors, under-21s and over-60s, free under 5. The garden museum and the Casa Pacheco Leão are free, with a ticket collected online. At the gate you pay in cash or by PIX, not by card.
Rules on site
The marmosets are used to visitors and take food from hands: do not feed them — a bite means rabies treatment. The late-afternoon tropical downpour is a daily event in summer.
