The statue was inaugurated in 1931 after five years of work, funded largely by a subscription raised by the Brazilian Catholic Church. Thirty-eight metres with its plinth, in reinforced concrete faced with thousands of soapstone triangles laid by hand, by women workers.

It stands at seven hundred and ten metres on the summit of Corcovado, inside Tijuca national park — the largest urban forest in the world, replanted by hand in the nineteenth century to protect the city's springs. The rack railway has climbed it since 1884.

Getting there

Rack railway from Cosme Velho, a twenty-minute climb through the forest. Official vans also leave from Largo do Machado and Paineiras.

What the price covers

Corcovado train return and access to the monument; 107 R$ from 7 to 11, free under 7.

Rules on site

The summit is often in cloud even when the city is clear: tickets are timed and are not refunded for fog. Check a summit webcam before setting off.
