Huaca Pucllana is a pyramid of the Lima culture, built around AD 400 from adobe bricks set on edge, like books on a shelf, with a gap between each. The technique is not accidental: it lets the structure absorb seismic movement, which is why it still stands in one of the most earthquake-prone regions on earth.
It is now surrounded by the apartment blocks of Miraflores. Excavation has uncovered human sacrifices and offerings; the site is still being dug, and the guided visit crosses a working excavation.
