The Grund is the lower town, at the bottom of the Alzette valley, fifty metres below the plateau. It was the quarter of craftsmen and tanneries — the water was down there, and so were the trades that needed it.
It is now one of the pleasantest parts of the city, with its stone houses along the river, Neumünster abbey converted into a cultural centre, and a row of bars. A public lift cut into the rock links the Saint-Esprit plateau to the Grund in a minute, free of charge.
Getting there
Panoramic lift from the Saint-Esprit plateau, free, or walk down the Montée du Grund.
What to bring
- Walking shoes
Rules on site
The lift closes at night: outside its hours the way back up is by the steps, which are steep. The quarter is at the valley floor and it is cooler and damper there than above.
