The Chemin de la Corniche runs along the seventeenth-century ramparts, above the Alzette valley. The Luxembourgish writer Batty Weber called it 'the most beautiful balcony in Europe', and the phrase has stuck in every guidebook.
What you look down on is the Grund, the lower town, with its stone houses by the river and the remains of the fortifications — Luxembourg was one of the most powerful strongholds in Europe, nicknamed the Gibraltar of the North, before the 1867 Treaty of London forced its dismantling.
