The casemates were cut from 1644 by the Spanish, then extended by the French under Vauban and by the Austrians: twenty-three kilometres of galleries in the sandstone, on several levels, with gun positions, workshops and kitchens.
They could shelter thousands of soldiers and their horses. The dismantling imposed in 1867 destroyed only the surface works — filling in the galleries would have brought down the city above. They served as air-raid shelters in the Second World War, for thirty-five thousand people.
Getting there
Montée de Clausen, at the foot of the Bock, in the old town. Reached on foot from the Chemin de la Corniche.
