Glenelg is where Europeans first landed in South Australia, in 1836, and the colony was proclaimed under a gum tree whose trunk is still there.
The tram line linking Victoria Square to the beach dates from 1929 and is the last of the historic network: it crosses the whole city and ends fifty metres from the sand. The sun sets straight into the sea, which is unusual on a south-facing coast.
Getting there
Tram from Victoria Square or North Terrace, half an hour, terminus at Moseley Square. The tram is free within the city centre.
Rules on site
The water of Gulf St Vincent stays cool even in summer and the southerly gets up in the afternoon. The tram is free in the central zone and charged beyond it: tag on.
