The market has run since 1869 and is the largest covered market in the southern hemisphere, with around eighty stalls under a single roof. Growers from the Adelaide Hills and the Barossa valley sell direct.
It reflects the city's immigration: Italian cheesemongers, Greek bakeries, Vietnamese grocers and Chinese canteens follow each other down the same aisles. On Friday evening and Saturday, unsold stock goes cheap at the end of the day, and every local knows it.
Getting there
Between Grote Street and Gouger Street, in the city centre. The free Victoria Square tram stops two minutes away.
Hours
Closed Sunday and Monday
Rules on site
Closed on Monday and Sunday: that is the commonest mistake. The best deals are in the last hour on Saturday, when the stalls clear out.
