The garden opened in 1857 on fifty hectares immediately on the edge of the city centre, inside the green belt Colonel Light imposed around Adelaide's grid.
The Palm House, a Victorian curved-glass conservatory imported from Germany in 1877, is one of the few of its kind still standing. The newer Bicentennial Conservatory holds a northern Australian rainforest under a twenty-seven-metre glass vault. Entry is free.
Getting there
North Terrace, east of the centre. Ten minutes on foot from Rundle Mall, or tram to Botanic Gardens.
Rules on site
The garden closes at dusk, with hours that change every month. The conservatories keep their own hours, shorter than the park's.
