Bophut was a village of fishermen and Chinese traders, and it is the only place on Samui where the original architecture survives: a single street of two-storey wooden houses, shop below, living quarters above.
The houses have been converted into restaurants and shops, but the frontages remain. On Friday evening the street closes to traffic for the night market: food stalls, crafts, and a distinctly quieter atmosphere than Chaweng.
Getting there
On the north coast, between Chaweng and Maenam. Fifteen minutes by scooter or songthaew from Chaweng.
What to bring
- Headlamp
- International driving permit
Rules on site
The Friday market fills the street and scooter parking spills a long way back: come early or park further out. The seafront restaurants charge for the view.
