In short

Samui has the infrastructure of a small town and the geography of an island: a ring road, private hospitals, supermarkets, and an airport that spares you the eight-hour bus from Bangkok.

Chaweng is loud, Lamai quieter, Maenam and Bophut suit a long stay better.

What it really costs

More expensive than Koh Phangan at equal comfort, but the long-term rental market is far deeper.

The private airport charges high fares: coming via the ferry from Surat Thani often cuts the cost of the journey by three.

When to go

The rainfall pattern is offset from the rest of the country. The worst month is November. The best window runs December to April.

July and August stay decent, despite being the European high season.

What nobody tells you

Tap water is not drinkable and the island's waste handling is a real problem in high season.

Power cuts are frequent in the rainy season: a UPS or a power bank changes everything when you work.

Visa

Short stay

Visa exemption for French citizens, extendable once on arrival.

Long stay

DTV visa for remote work, business visas depending on the structure.

What you can visit without a tour in Koh Samui, with the gate price.

  • Big Buddha

    must-seeFree

Twelve metres of gilded statue on an islet joined by a causeway.

Go up at dawn: the steps are not yet burning, the platform faces east and the sun comes up straight over Koh Phangan. The sarongs at the entrance are lent, not sold — if someone asks you to pay to cover your shoulders, try the next counter.

temple free, donation invited; covering dress expected

  • Na Muang Waterfalls

    must-seeFree

Two falls in the jungle, one of them thirty metres and reached on foot.

The climb to the second waterfall takes twenty minutes on foot. The touts in the car park will tell you otherwise, to sell the quad.

free access to the first waterfall; the quad or jeep ride is charged

  • Fisherman's Village

    must-seeFree

The Chinese timber houses of Bophut, and the Friday evening street market.

The Friday market opens around five and peaks at seven: arrive early, park up the street, and eat at the stalls at the back. The seafront terraces serve the same food and charge for the view.
