White Beach runs four kilometres along Boracay's west coast. Its sand is crushed coral, white and so fine that it stays cool in full sun, and the water is shallow for tens of metres.
The island was closed for six months in 2018 for a clean-up: sewage was going into the sea and building had reached the shore. On reopening, structures too close to the water were demolished, a thirty-metre strip was cleared, and beach parties, paid sandcastles and roving vendors were banned.
Getting there
Boat from Caticlan, fifteen minutes, then tricycle or shuttle to the beach. The environmental fee is paid at the pier.
Rules on site
From June to October the south-west monsoon blows onshore: the sea gets rough and seaweed piles up. The east coast at Bulabog then takes over for swimming.
