The Kisite-Mpunguti marine park, off Wasini island, has protected four coral islets and eleven square kilometres of reef since 1978. It is one of Kenya's oldest marine parks.
A group of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins is resident year-round, which makes sightings reliable — unlike sites where you go looking for animals passing through. Wasini island itself has no cars and no roads: you get around on foot, and a path crosses a forest of uplifted fossil coral, dry.
Getting there
An hour and a half by road south of Diani to Shimoni, then twenty minutes by boat to Wasini.
What the price covers
paid dhow trip plus Kisite-Mpunguti marine park fees; rates to be confirmed
What to bring
- Walking shoes
- Reef shoes
- Swimsuit
Rules on site
The marine park fee is added to the trip price and paid in cash. Do not swim with the dolphins or chase them: harassment of resident groups is the main threat to them.
