The main island of Bora Bora is circled in thirty-two kilometres on a flat road, almost entirely at sea level. It is the island's only road, and it passes through all three villages: Vaitape, Anau and Faanui.
It takes three or four hours by bike with stops, and it is the cheapest way to see Bora Bora — in a destination where almost everything is sold as an organised trip. Along the way are American guns from the Second World War, the island having served as a Pacific supply base from 1942 to 1946.
Getting there
Bikes for hire in Vaitape, where the shuttles from the motu land. The road circles the island completely.
What to bring
- 1.5 L of water
- Swimsuit
- Cap
- Sunscreen
Rules on site
There is no shade over most of the route and few shops: two litres of water, a hat and sunscreen. The road is narrow with no verge, and cars move fast on it.
