The theatre was cut into the hillside in the second century, under Antoninus Pius, when the city was called Philadelphia. It held six thousand spectators and faces north, so that the audience stayed in shade.
It is still in use: concerts and festivals are held here, and the acoustics still work from the back row. Two small museums, one of folklore and one of popular traditions, occupy the wings on either side of the stage.
Getting there
Downtown, on Hashemite Square. The whole historic centre is walkable from here.

The tiers are high, narrow and without a handrail: coming down is trickier than going up. Covered by the Jordan Pass, like the citadel.
