The Star Ferry has crossed the harbour since 1888 and it is still transport rather than an attraction: people take it to work. The crossing between Tsim Sha Tsui and Central takes about ten minutes at water level, and costs a few Hong Kong dollars.
The lower deck is cheaper and closer to the water; the upper deck has the clear view. The boats are double-ended and never turn round: the seat backs flip over to face the other way.
Getting there
Piers at Tsim Sha Tsui on the Kowloon side and Central on the island side. Pay by Octopus card or coins at the turnstile.
Hours
6.30am – 11.30pm, a sailing every six to twelve minutes depending on the hour
What the price covers
the Central – Tsim Sha Tsui crossing on the upper deck, weekdays; HK$4 on the lower deck. At weekends and on public holidays, HK$6.50 upper and HK$5.60 lower. HK$2.90 for a child aged 3 to 11.
Rules on site
The Symphony of Lights show is better seen from the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade than from the boat. Crossings stop when a typhoon signal 8 is raised.
