South Bank occupies the site of the 1988 World Expo, on the south bank of the Brisbane river. After the exposition, the city turned the ground into parkland rather than selling it.
Streets Beach is an artificial beach with a filtered freshwater lagoon, real sand and lifeguards, in the middle of the city facing the towers. It exists because Brisbane has no beach: the river is silty and flood-prone, and the sea is an hour away. It is free and open all year.
Getting there
South bank of the Brisbane river, facing the centre. Train to South Bank, or walk across the Victoria Bridge.
Rules on site
The lagoon closes periodically for maintenance and after heavy rain. Do not swim in the river: it is silty, the current is strong and boats use it.
