Schönbrunn is the Habsburgs' summer residence, rebuilt in the eighteenth century under Maria Theresa: one thousand four hundred and forty-one rooms, of which about forty are shown. Mozart played here at six, the Congress of Vienna danced here, and Franz Joseph was born and died here.
The park runs to a hundred and sixty hectares and costs nothing: the Gloriette on its hill, the formal garden, the maze, and the oldest zoo in the world still working, founded in 1752 as the imperial menagerie. The climb to the Gloriette gives you the palace and the whole of Vienna behind it.
Getting there
Metro line U4, Schönbrunn station, then five minutes on foot. The park is free to enter through several gates.
What the price covers
paid entry to the palace, with several routes of different length; the park itself is free. Rates to be checked
Rules on site
The palace ticket is timed and entry is by slot, not on arrival: the ticket queue runs over an hour in summer. The park has neither ticket nor queue.
