The Naschmarkt has occupied the covered bed of the Wien river since 1793 — the river was buried under a slab to make room. It runs a kilometre and a half with about a hundred and twenty fixed stalls in two rows.
The half nearer the city is a food market — cheeses, spices, olives, Turkish and Balkan goods inherited from successive waves of immigration. The Kettenbrückengasse half has turned into eating counters. On Saturday morning a flea market is added at the far end, and that is the best day.
Getting there
Metro lines U1, U2 and U4 at Karlsplatz, or U4 at Kettenbrückengasse at the other end. The market links the two.
Rules on site
Closed on Sundays, restaurant counters included. The stalls handing out dried-fruit samples at the entrance charge by weight at a price they don't state: ask before accepting.
