The market was built in 1925 on an iron frame attributed to Eiffel's workshop, and it is still the neighbourhood market: locals do their shopping here, and visitors occupy one aisle of it.
The morning fruit juices are the way in — you choose the fruit, drink at the counter, and the second glass is traditionally on the house. The back of the market holds the soups and set lunches, served for a few soles, and it is the cheapest meal in town.
Getting there
Five minutes on foot south-west of the Plaza de Armas, down Santa Clara street. San Pedro railway station is right beside it.
What to bring
- Dry bag
Rules on site
Pickpocketing is common in the tight aisles: bag in front, phone away. For water and juice, ask for no ice in your first days, while your stomach adjusts.
