Salamanca Place is lined with 1830s sandstone warehouses, built by convicts for the whaling and grain trade. They were left derelict and then converted into galleries, workshops and restaurants from the 1970s.
The market has been held there every Saturday since 1972, with around three hundred stalls: Tasmanian growers, Huon pine woodworkers, cheesemakers, bric-a-brac. Tasmania has high-quality agriculture and a small population, which makes the market considerably better than its size would suggest.

The market runs on Saturday only, from half past eight to three: on other days the place is an ordinary restaurant strip. Hobart weather turns fast — bring a waterproof layer.
