The Sabeto springs sit at the foot of the Sleeping Giant range, so called because its outline suggests a man lying down. The site is run by the neighbouring village and has stayed very basic: a few mud pools and three hot pools, with no development.
The ritual is simple and it is what makes the place: you coat yourself in volcanic mud, let it dry in the sun, rinse it off in the first pool, then move through the hot pools in decreasing temperature. The orchid garden next door was created by the actor Raymond Burr.
Getting there
Twenty kilometres north-east of Nadi, half an hour by road up the Sabeto valley. A taxi negotiated as a return.
What the price covers
a small entry fee, rate to be confirmed on site
What to bring
- Swimsuit
Rules on site
The mud stains light swimwear permanently: wear an old one. The facilities are very basic — no enclosed changing room, and the rinsing water is the pool itself.
