Rinjani reaches three thousand seven hundred and twenty-six metres and is Indonesia's second volcano. Its six-kilometre crater holds a crescent lake, the Segara Anak, and an active secondary cone that has grown inside it, Gunung Baru.
The mountain is sacred to the Sasak and the Balinese, who leave offerings in the lake. The summit climb takes three days; the two-day trek stops at the crater rim, which gives the view over the lake without the summit push — which is done at night, in ash you slide back in.
Getting there
Trailheads at Senaru or Sembalun, two to three hours by road from Mataram. A guide and porters are compulsory.
What the price covers

Rules on site
The park closes entirely from January to March for the rainy season. The summit push is done at night on unstable ash, at near-freezing temperatures: this is not a hike, it is a climb.
