The redwoods were planted in 1901 as part of a trial: New Zealand was looking for exotic species that might supply timber, and a hundred and seventy were tested here. The Californian redwoods grew faster than in California itself, thanks to the climate, and now reach seventy metres.
The forest is crossed by walking trails and a well-known mountain-bike network. The Treewalk is a suspended walkway between the trunks twenty metres up, seven hundred metres long, lit in the evening by lanterns designed by David Trubridge.
