Josefov is what remains of the ghetto, most of which was razed at the turn of the twentieth century in the name of sanitation. Six synagogues and the Jewish town hall were spared, and the Old-New Synagogue, from 1270, is the oldest still in use in Europe.
The old cemetery served three centuries on ground that could not be extended: graves were stacked up to twelve deep, and the twelve thousand visible stones overlap, leaning on each other. The walls of the Pinkas Synagogue carry the names of the seventy-seven thousand Czech victims of the Shoah.
