This is not a castle but a fortified town of seven hectares, occupied without a break since the ninth century and still the seat of the Czech presidency. Guinness records it as the largest castle complex in the world.
Inside, St Vitus Cathedral took nearly six centuries to finish, from 1344 to 1929. Golden Lane, a row of cottages built against the rampart for the archers, housed Kafka at number 22 for two years.
