La Punta is the point break that made Montañita's name. It is a right-hander over rock and sand at the northern end of the beach, and it works best on a rising tide with a southerly swell.
The village has gone in forty years from a fishing hamlet to a party destination known across South America, and the two populations sit awkwardly together: the surfers are in the water at six, the cocktail street closes at five. The wave, for its part, has not changed.
Getting there
At the northern end of Montañita beach, ten minutes on foot from the village centre.

Rules on site
The bottom is rocky on the inside and the current runs along the point: it is not a beginner's spot, whatever the village schools suggest. Safety in the village drops at night — leave nothing on the beach and walk back with someone.
