Olón is ten minutes north of Montañita and it is its opposite: six kilometres of nearly empty sand, no parties, a gentle slope and a wave more workable for learning.
The two villages are separated by a headland you can walk round at low tide. On the cliff, the Santuario Blanca Estrella de la Mar, a modern church, overlooks the bay — its terrace is the coast's viewpoint. Sea turtles nest on this beach between December and March.
Getting there
Ten minutes north of Montañita by bus or moto-taxi. The headland can be walked round at low tide.
Rules on site
The headland can only be passed at low tide: check the timetable, people get caught out there. In nesting season, December to March, keep away from the marked nests and do not shine lights on the beach at night.
