Po Nagar overlooks the mouth of the Cai river, north of Nha Trang. The Cham built it between the eighth and eleventh centuries: four of the original eight brick towers remain, raised with no visible mortar — a technique never fully reconstructed.
The northern tower, the tallest at twenty-three metres, holds a statue of the goddess Yan Po Nagar seated on a stone base. This is not a ruin: Vietnamese and Cham people come to burn incense here every day, and worship has never stopped in twelve centuries.
Getting there
On Cu Lao hill, north bank of the Cai river, two kilometres from the centre. Ten minutes by taxi from the beach.
