Fernando Botero, born in Medellín, gave twenty-three of his bronzes to his city in 2002, on one condition: that they stand outdoors, without railings, and that people could touch them. The square was laid out for that.
The district was one of the most run-down in the centre, and the installation was part of an urban reclamation plan. The statues are rubbed to a shine in the same places — the city has polished them. The Museo de Antioquia opposite holds the rest of the gift.
Getting there
Metro line A, Parque Berrío station; the exit opens onto the square. The Museo de Antioquia is across from it.
Hours
The neighbouring museum opens Monday to Saturday 9.40am – 5.30pm, Sundays and holidays until 4.30pm
Rules on site
Central Medellín is very busy by day and empties in the evening: visit in daylight and take the metro back before dark. Pickpocketing is common around the station.
