The Pantheon was rebuilt by Hadrian around AD 125 and has been in continuous use ever since, which explains its condition: converted into a church in 609, it was never abandoned or quarried for stone.
Its dome, forty-three metres across, is still the largest ever built in unreinforced concrete. The Romans lightened the mix as they went up, from basalt at the base to pumice at the crown, and the nine-metre oculus is open: rain falls inside, and the slightly domed floor is pierced with drains.
Getting there
Piazza della Rotonda, in the historic centre. No metro station nearby: ten minutes on foot from Barberini or Piazza Venezia.
