The Flavian Amphitheatre was inaugurated in AD 80 and held around fifty thousand people, cleared in minutes through seventy-six numbered entrances — spectators carried a token showing their tier. The principle is that of every modern stadium.
The arena floor is gone, exposing the hypogeum: two levels of corridors, cages and hoists from which the animals and scenery came up. The same ticket opens the Roman Forum and the Palatine, and it is better to start with those: their queue is far shorter.
Getting there
Metro line B, Colosseo station; the exit is right in front. The Forum entrance on via dei Fori Imperiali has a far shorter queue.
Hours
8.30am – 7.15pm from 29 March to 30 September, 8.30am – 4.30pm from 25 October to 28 February
What the price covers
24-hour ticket covering the Colosseum, the Forum and the Palatine. Two euros for EU citizens aged 18 to 24, free under 17 and for European visitors over 65.
Rules on site
The ticket is timed, named and booked online: there is no gate sale in high season. Fake guides in costume outside the station sell skip-the-line passes that are not valid.
