Pokhara's World Peace Pagoda is one of eighty stupas built around the world by the Japanese Buddhist order Nipponzan-Myohoji, founded after Hiroshima with the aim of raising peace monuments on every continent.
This one was finished in 1999 on the southern ridge above Lake Phewa, at eleven hundred metres. Its position gives the only view that takes in the lake, the town and the Annapurna range on one axis. You cross by boat then climb, forty-five minutes on a forest path.
Getting there
Cross the lake by boat from Lakeside, then a forty-five-minute climb on foot. A road also reaches it by taxi.
What to bring
- Covering clothes
- Walking shoes
- Headlamp
Rules on site
Shoes off to go up onto the stupa platform, and modest dress. The path is unlit: for sunset, arrange a taxi back or bring a torch.
